Jacky on call to help you raise money

Date published: 25 March 2009

Meet Jacky Plant, the woman keen to offer help, advice and encouragement to fund-raisers old and new — and the one who will be picking up the cheque.

Mrs Plant has been a fund-raising officer at Christie for 18 years.

She has worked closely with the Oldham and Rochdale fund-raising group which, under the leadership of veteran fund-raiser Lilian Walsh, has raked in more than £600,000 for the hospital.

Mrs Plant described the six-strong team, which is desperate for more people to join its ranks, as “totally dedicated, wonderful people”.

And the team’s challenge now is to help to raise the £100,000 for the Christie’s at Oldham Campaign.

Christie doctors working from a new £17 million radiotherapy centre currently being built at the Royal Oldham Hospital, will treat people with the more common types of the disease, such as breast, prostate and some lung cancers.

People with more complex cancers will still go to the Christie for radiotherapy.

Mrs Plant said: “This is an exciting time for us — this brilliant new centre in Oldham will help many people.

“Many patients won’t have to travel to the Christie — they will be in really good hands here in Oldham — and it will save a lot of stress, anxiety and travelling time.”

She added: “The people of Oldham have always been brilliant — incredibly generous, supportive and warm.

“I have met hundreds of people from Oldham who have raised money during my time with the Christie, and I have always been very very proud of each and every one.

Vital

“It is vital that we raise money for this appeal, but we can’t do that without the help of the people of Oldham.

“Every penny counts, No matter how small the sum raised it will help us reach the target, and I am here to give help, advice and support to anyone who needs it.”

Mrs Plant added: “Anyone with any time at all to spare us, any offers of transport or help of any kind can ring me. I will be delighted to talk to them.”

Mrs Plant can be contacted at the Christie on 0161-446 3979 or log on to www.christie.org for some fund-raising tips.
