Windfarm would 'devastate' landscape, enquiry told

Date published: 25 March 2009

An enquiry into the controversial proposals to build a windfarm on moorland above Littleborough was told by a representative of Rochdale Council that the turbines would irreparably damage a beautiful landscape.

The Crook Hill wind farm would be made up of 12 x 125metre tall turbines at a cost of £28million but according to the Council they would only generate a comparatively small amount of renewable energy.

The five week hearing into the proposals closes this week and a final decision will be made by the secretary of state later in the year.

Council representatives have argued that the amount of energy generated by the turbines is far outweighed by the damage that they will do to the skyline above Littleborough.

Developers Coronation Power say that 11,000 homes could be powered by the windfarm and renewable energy targets dictate that the turbines have to be developed somewhere and that the Crook Hill site is one of the most viable locations in the region.
