Shoppers warned of street thieves
Date published: 16 March 2009
Police in Rochdale are investigating a spate of bag and purse thefts.
Between December 2008 and February 2009, 15 people have reported that their purses or wallets have been taken out of their bags while they were out shopping or in cafes or pubs in the town.
The thefts have taken place when the victims have not noticed at Brambells Café in the Wheatsheaf Centre and the Regal Moon pub, The Butts.
The purse-snatches also took place at supermarkets such as Asda on Dane Street, Tesco on Silk Street and Morrison’s on Kingsway.
Most of the thefts have taken place while the victim has placed a bag under a chair or table or while they have been shopping.
Steven Wastell 27, of Halliday Court, Smithybridge, Rochdale, has been charged with six offences of theft and is due to appear before Rochdale Magistrates’ Court today, Monday 16 March 2009.
Detective Sergeant Sam Halligan, of the Volume Crime Team in Rochdale, said: “Most of the time, the victims did not realise they’d fallen victim to a bag-dipper until later on.
”Many of them have been pensioners and I believe there may be more victims out there. Perhaps you had thought you had lost your purse when you were out in Rochdale. If you now think it may have been stolen, I’d urge you to call us so we can investigate.
”Taking purses and wallets out of people’s bags is a mean offence and I’d advise people to be on their guard when they are out and about. Be vigilant and make sure you keep your bag with you at all times. Be alert and keep hold of it instead of leaving it under chairs or tables in cafes.”
Anyone who believes they may be a victim should call the Volume Crime Team on 0161 856 8716.
