Step back in time at Castleton's new 'retro' sweet shop

Date published: 13 March 2009

If you think the days of Kola Kubes, Gobstoppers and Fizz Wizz are long gone, think again.

A brand new sweet shop has appeared in the centre of Castleton with all the traditional, old time favourites which many presume are a thing of the past.

Like going back in time, the shop is covered with jars of retro sweets, larger than life gobstoppers, lollies and dummies, all in the old fashioned packaging which, according to the shopkeepers, is exciting the adults as much as the children.

John and Michaela Fernandez came up with the idea of Candy Land, on Manchester Road, after spending years in a ‘butty van’ on Stakehill Industrial Estate.

Michaela said: “We were bored and thought we’d do something exciting. And we are so glad we did now.

“It has only been a week and the feedback has been amazing.

She added: “We’ve sat here while parents drag their kids past before school, they’re peering through the window in amazement. But then the adults come in on the way back, I think they are more excited than the children”.

Candy Land is on Manchester Road near Castleton Swimming Baths and All That Sparkles.
