Schools show they can cut it
Date published: 06 March 2009
Technology students at Rochdale schools have tapped into one of the wonders of science for a special competition.
Pupils from eight Rochdale and eight Oldham schools gathered at the City Learning Centre in Hollinwood under the watchful eye of industry professionals to look at cutting-edge computer software, including movie making and web design.
The teams of eight pupils from each school were then given the task of designing, making and promoting a product made either partly or completely using a laser cutter.
The teams then presented their products to a panel of industry experts, with representatives from Unimatic, Techsoft, EDM and Patterson and Rothwell among others judging their efforts.
St Peter's primary school were the pride of the Rochdale outfits, winning a joint prize for the best primary school entry with Lyndhurst primary school in Oldham.
The team took home £300 worth of software for their school and a 3-D printer worth £700.
