Bogus callers target 88-year-old

Date published: 04 March 2009

Burglars pretending be from the gas/water board are targeting elderly residents, police have warned.

An 88-year-old lady became the latest victim on Monday (2 March) when a man who claimed to be checking her pipes made off with her money and keys.

The incident, which happened on Queensway, Castleton, follows a string of similar events, with some victims being pushed or hit if they refuse to let them into their houses.

Police are urging all local residents to be on their guard.

Castleton Councillor Ted Flynn received a warning leaflet through the door. He said: “If the police are issuing warnings then there is clearly a problem that needs to be tackled.”

Detective Inspector Stephen Earnshaw, from Rochdale CID, said: "Do not let anyone into your house unless they can show you identification. If they are a reputable salesperson or caller, they will happily show you ID and if you are in any doubt call their office to confirm they are who they say they are.

"If you have any suspicions, do not let them in under any circumstances and call police.

"We need to work together. Please look out for your friends and neighbours and report any incidents to police straight away."
