Pupil storms out after 'racist' book study
Date published: 03 March 2009
A black pupil walked out of school in objection because a “racially offensive” book was read out in class.
Tinashe Makunike, 16, claimed the classic book To Kill A Mockingbird made him feel uncomfortable and undermined as the only black pupil in class.
It is believed the pupil stormed out after a drama company, acting out the story, used the word ‘N*****’.
The well-known novel recounts the fictional trial of a black worker in an small town who is wrongly accused of attacking a white woman.
Tinashe’s walkout lasted for over a week but he has now returned to the school and is attending his lessons, working towards his GCSE exams.
Headteacher Susan Casey has confirmed Tinashe’s return to school and has confirmed the school deals with incidents of racism very seriously.
A full school comment to follow shortly.
