Councillors in gully-cleaning mission
Date published: 27 February 2009

A gully good job: Councillors plan to have every gully in the town cleaned and repaired.
Councillors are calling on the community to help them clean every gully in the town.
A “special team” from Rochdale Council has been hard at work unblocking hundreds of blocked gullies, some of which need digging out and repairing.
But to ensure their mission is complete, Councillor William Hobhouse and Councillor Mark Birkett need to know where the remaining blocked gullies are so they can see they get fixed.
Results for the Kingsway ward show that special crews have inspected and cleaned 2,531 gullies.
Councillor Mark Birkett said: ‘We put £120,000 extra money into cleaning the gullies across the borough and it looks as if we’re well on the way to delivering positive results. However, Kingsway Ward has the largest number of gullies that the crews couldn’t get at.
“It is the community that is the eyes and ears of the Council, so I would ask residents to let us know of any blocked gullies in the ward.
Councillor William Hobhouse, Chair of Rochdale Township added: “Our job as Councillors is to make sure that we deliver on our promise to clear every gully in the Borough. We’re 95% there, but for the last 5%, we need the help of our residents”.
If you know where there is a blocked gully, please call the Council’s Highways number 0845 121 2979.
