Castleton residents warned to secure their sheds

Date published: 26 February 2009

Rochdale Police are asking people in Castleton to secure their sheds and garages after a spate of burglaries since February.

According to officers, the break-ins were mainly down to poor security measures with tools, hand tools, bicycles and toys the main items targeted.

Residents are advised to make sure their shed or garage is always fully secured and to lock away all tools after working in the garden as burglars could use them to attempt to break into the house.

Other advice includes using security lighting, adding gravel to paths as it creates a noise when anyone walks over it and acts as a deterrent and using prickly plants in the garden.

Jackie Bell, Crime Reduction Advisor, said: “Since the beginning of the month there have been eight burglaries in the Castleton area and I would just like to remind people about the quick and easy steps you can take to prevent further incidents. Remember a shed is only a wooden box and can contain pounds worth of equipment.

“Most burglaries are opportunistic and if a burglar spots a chance to steal other people’s possessions easily and get away with it they will. The simple message is that you ensure your shed is secured.”
