Four apprentices have kick started their careers at Rochdale Council.
Keeley Hughes, Hannah Davies, Nichola Djamalis and Ashlea Oatway (pictured) started their apprenticeships last year after winning places on the council's apprenticeship programme, and have been working with a number of council services.
Ms Hughes, 22, has been getting to grips with office life in the corporate procurement team. “It’s really interesting, and the team I’ve been working with are so helpful," she said. "I’ve learnt lots already, dealing with suppliers and seeing how big orders are placed and processed.”
Ms Davies, 18, didn’t know what she wanted to do after leaving school, but thought an apprenticeship would enable her to keep her options open. “I’m enjoying the experience and the variety is perfect," she said. "I’ve already spent time with the communications team and next I’ll be working on weddings and other events at the Town Hall. We all get on well together, so its been a great way to meet new friends too.”
Ms Djamalis, 19, has been working in the legal and democratic service. “It’s been excellent so far, I’m doing lots of general administration duties at the moment, using computers loads and there is so much more I’m looking forward to," she said. "It’s better than college, because you’re getting real work experience at the same time as learning.”
Rochdale Council is raising awareness of National Apprenticeship Week by highlighting the contribution that apprentices are making to the council.
They currently employ five apprentices and recruit them annually.
Stephen Harper, Head of People Management said: “Many apprentices go on to careers in the authority, so it really helps with our recruitment and retention strategy. Our apprentices get valuable experience and qualifications…it’s a really important part of building a skilled, committed and motivated workforce. The girls have made an excellent impression so far.”
At 17, Ms Oatway is the youngest apprentice, but she’s already planning her career at the council: “It’s early days, but I would like to pursue a career here; there are lots of opportunities on the horizon, but at the moment I’m just enjoying the experience. I think apprenticeships are a great way to start.”
