A627(M) re-opened after lorry smash

Date published: 26 February 2009

A lorry driver has been taken to hospital after his large vehicle overturned on a busy motorway slip road.

Fire officers, police, and an ambulance attended the A627M, near the M62, at 8.00am this morning after the Renault Artic Lorry smashed into a barrier, causing tons of weight to overturn.

Recovery crews were at the scene throughout the day and there was a traffic delay near junction 21 of the M62.

There was a diversion in place coming from the Oldham side of the motorway to Heywood while motorists were advised to slow down as they went under the bridge on the M62 because of debris that had fallen from the wagon onto the motorway.

The driver has been described by police as “walking wounded” and is being treated at Rochdale Infirmary for minor head injuries.

A spokesman from Greater Manchester Police said: “We were called out at 7.44 this morning after reports that the large lorry had overturned.

“We believe there could also be a diesel spillage, which is being dealt with at the moment.

“It is possible the vehicle won’t be removed from the site until later this afternoon”.
