Staggering debt figures exposed

Date published: 20 February 2009

Rochdale’s share of the national debt totals at a staggering seven billion pounds – an average of £33,000 per man, woman and child.

The jaw-dropping figures are part of national statistics revealed today, which total the country’s debt as just surpassing two trillion pounds.

If the debt was to be shared between every Rochdale adult who is on the electoral register, it would work out at over £43,000 per person.

This is almost twice Rochdale’s average annual income of £22,589.

An average family household of five people would total at £165,000.

The latest data from the Office for National Statistics has confronted the reality of the part nationalisation of Royal Bank of Scotland and the Lloyds Banking Group.

Paul Rowen MP said the government has gotten themselves into a hole.

He added: “What the Government do need to look at is accelerating public sector projects like our new sixth form college, our new schools, Metrolink and other projects that are key to the future prosperity of our town.

“This money is already budgeted for and by bringing these projects forward we can provide much-needed jobs for local people, whilst benefiting as a town.

“What we need to see is decisive action by the Government and not just a raft of announcements that aren’t implemented”.
