Library showcases local history

Date published: 20 February 2009

Heywood Library has been brought bang up to date following its recent refurbishment, but the Grade 2 listed building is hoping not to forget the past.

The rich and diverse history of Heywood is being permanently recognised thanks to a new purpose built display case, now proudly situated in the library entrance.

The display is part of a move by Rochdale Council to make local history more accessible.
“We wanted somewhere in the centre of town where local artefacts could be displayed for the benefit of residents,” said Councillor Alan McCarthy, Chairman of the Heywood Township.

“I’m really pleased that the pieces of Heywood history can now be proudly displayed. This is currently the only library in the borough to have its own purpose built museum display case.”

Among the items presently on show are objects from the Kay Collection. Kay was an important benefactor to Heywood.

There are also items which celebrate Heywood’s textile heritage, on loan from the Arts and Heritage collections. Over the year the display will change to reflect the history of the town and borough.

The displays will complement the information contained in the local history section of the library, making it a place where people can not only read about local history, but view historical objects as well.

Councillor McCarthy added that it is important that the wealth of interesting and unusual artefacts are made available for all to enjoy. "These new displays offer people an easy and convenient way of learning more about their local history," he said.

Area Librarian, Janice Tod said the display has already had a lot of interest from visitors. “It’s certainly a talking point and because it’s all about Heywood it’s perfect," she said. "This is just one of a number of moves we are making to improve our library service, and to ensure they are at the heart of the communities they serve."

The arts and heritage display is one of a host of improvements at the Church Street Library, which now also boasts 12 computers with free high speed internet access, a community meeting room and a children’s area.

Actress Samia Smith, best known for playing ‘Maria Connor’ in top ITV1 soap ‘Coronation Street’ is due to officially open the new-look library on Saturday 28 February.
