Mill building damaged by fire
Date published: 20 February 2009
Workers were evacuated on Edinburgh Way as an old mill building set ablaze this morning (Friday 20 February).
Crews attended a building next to the Soccer Factory at Dunlop Mill, Edinburgh Way, at 9.00am after a blaze, believed to be caused by an electrical fault, damaged the building.
Workers from an adjacent furniture store were told to leave the building as fire officers investigated the scene, and the Rochdale AFC half term soccer school was cancelled.
The Soccer Factory is fully operational and will proceed with all planned events tomorrow.
Eddie Burns, who works at a nearby furniture shop said: “It was quite a large fire but most of it has gone now, there is just a lot of smoke.
“We were told to get out of the building, I suppose in case the fire spread, but it all looks under control now”.
A spokesperson from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “Crews were called out at 9.44 this morning to a fire at a commercial property.
“We believe it was caused by an electrical substation”.
Fire crews are still on the scene. (11.00am).
