Old lady 'extremely shaken' after break-in ordeal
Date published: 10 February 2009
An old lady was left frightened and helpless after two men forced their way into her home.
The 80-year-old pensioner had just returned from shopping when a man forced his way through her front door, pushing her out of the way, on Chesham Avenue, Castleton on Friday 23 January.
The frail victim tried to close the door but the man proved stronger and made his way inside, shortly followed by a second man, who began searching the flat for valuables.
Both men left empty handed but left the victim “extremely shaken”.
The men were described as white, 5ft 8ins to 5ft 9ins tall, aged 20 to 27 years old and of medium build. They were clean-shaven and respectable looking, one was wearing a navy blue jacket, navy trousers and black shoes.
Police Constable Lee Worswick of Rochdale's robbery unit said: "These men left the victim extremely shaken, forcing their way into her home.
"I would urge people to be on their guard when going into shared accommodation, don't let any strangers walk in behind you.
"Also, check identification of anyone claiming to be there on behalf of a company as all official workers carry ID and are happy to show it.
"If anyone noticed two men acting suspiciously in the area or you recognise the description of the offenders please get in touch."
Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 8716 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.
