Government spy centre on the doorstep
Date published: 08 February 2009
The Government is building a secret database to track the movement of travellers, and it will be housed 20 miles from Rochdale.
An intelligence centre will store everything from names and addresses to seat reservations and passenger movements of 60M British travellers, and will monitor who is moving in and out of the UK.
Information will then be stored at the Home Office for up to a decade, according to the national media.
The intelligence centre will be based in Wythenshawe, and could even keep watch of travel companions’ movements.
Phil Woolas, the immigration minister said: “The UK has one of the toughest borders in the world and we are determined to ensure it stays that way.
“Our high-tec electronic system will allow us to count all passengers in and out and targets those who aren’t willing to play by our rules”.
