Book a place at Langley reading event

Date published: 05 February 2009

Parents on the Langley housing estate in Middleton have the chance to help their kids read by brushing up on their own literary skills.

After the success of a reading workshop last month, a second is being held on 11 February by Voluntary Reading Help, a national organisation that promotes parental involvement with children’s education.

Social landlord Bowlee Park Housing and Langley Children’s Centre teamed up to organise the informal workshops which will benefit 24 people from the Langley estate.

The session this month will discuss listening skills and tips on how to build children’s reading confidence and is free to attend with crèche facilities for parents with toddlers.

Bowlee Park Housing community initiatives team leader Sharon Thomas, said the workshops benefit anyone attending. She said: “Helping children to read can be one of the most rewarding activities for any parent. It builds confidence, helps children pick up new ideas quickly and develops their imagination.

“The session in January was really helpful and we are hoping for the same great turnout for the second instalment.

“Although it may have been a while since parents went to school, these workshops will focus on how enjoyable it is pick up a book with your children.

“Bowlee Park Housing organise a number of training courses to help people raise aspirations and also to develop new skills to help people get back into work. We really want people to make the most use of the various sessions and opportunities on offer.”

Martine Summers said the session she attended was particularly useful. She said: “It showed what books were appropriate for his age group and how to keep him interested."
Pat Hiley, who has a four-year-old, agreed. She said: "The information was good and the letter pack helpful with good advice on what types of book to read."

The session will be held on Wednesday 11 February from 9.30am - 12.00pm. Anyone wishing to attend should contact Jo Morris, Parent Empowerment Worker, Langley Children's Centre, Windermere Road, 0161 653 9526.
