Edie, 102, is Corrie’s oldest fan

A Coronation Street fan who never gets bored celebrated her 102nd birthday yesterday.

Heywood resident Edie Shufflebotham, who was born in Failsworth, puts her longevity down to doing everything in moderation.

She celebrated her big birthday with a meal with a friend last Sunday, but had to cancel lunch with her daughter Anne Sykes, yesterday, because of bad weather.

Edie, has watched “Coronation Street” from the first episode back in December 1960.

She was even lucky enough to get a personal tour of the sets of the famous soap on her 100th birthday.

But she was more than happy to keep this birthday low key.

She got a chance to walk down Britain’s most famous Street after her daughter and son-in-law John Sykes, a retired vicar of Oldham, organised the surprise visit.

Anne described her mother, who once worked at Hooley Mill, Heywood: “My mother never gets bored. She spends time knitting and has lots of visitors.

“She is also committed to St Luke’s Church in Heywood and she has also been fortunate to have reasonable health.”
