Another mill gutted by blaze: updated pictures

Date published: 03 February 2009

Passers-by have stopped in shock as yet another mill has gone up in a blaze of fire.

More than 20 fire fighters are tackling an inferno at Lodge Mill, Middleton, which started approximately 5.00pm tonight (Tuesday 3 February).

Six separate appliances are currently on scene tackling the blaze, and are expected to be there for some hours to come.

It is believed no-one has been hurt in the incident.

Councillor Keith Swift, who arrived in Middleton to attend a township meeting, reported ash falling on his head as he stood talking to Rochdale Online.

He said: “It is a very large fire, I am stood about 50 yards away and it is as close as anyone could get”.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “We are dealing with a large fire here, six appliances have gone over there, it could take some time”.

The fire follows two “suspicious” mill fires which took place at Dexine Mill, Spotland, twice in one week.
