Breaking News: Ungritted roads causes taxi chaos

Date published: 02 February 2009

A furious taxi rank owner has slammed the council after ungritted roads caused a series of accidents among drivers.

Newline and Phoenix owner Saleem Hussain was first called out after a driver lost control of his car on Albert Royd Street and plunged into a residents wall at 8.30pm tonight (Monday 2 February).

Another driver reported leaving a customer stranded after getting caught up in the chaotic weather, and was sliding around to the point he has refused to work.

Now, the rank has been left in chaos as other drivers have said it it too dangerous to be out in the roads.

Laura Dixon, 23, was sat in her house when she heard the car smash into her garden wall.
She said: “I’m still shaking like a leaf. I just heard this almighty smash and ran outside to see what was happening.

“The driver had hit the wall at such a speed, I’m amazed he is ok. His car is a complete mess.

She added: “The roads are horrendous all around Rochdale, something needs to be done before people get killed”.

Rank owner Saleem Hussain said: “It’s time the council see they are putting lives at risk

“My drivers are refusing to work because the roads are so dangerous, what does that say about the conditions out there?

“A number of them have experienced accidents or have lost control of their cars while they are out.

“The last big snowfall last year caused chaos, they should see just how bad it is and get something done about it before its too late”.

He added: “Plus there are youths out all over the place throwing stones and snowballs at our cars, all we are trying to do is provide a service”.

Rochdale Online will include a reply from Rochdale Borough Council tomorrow (Tuesday 3 February).
