More than 1000 Rochdale jobs predicted to go during recession
Date published: 02 February 2009
Figures published this week in Gavurin's Recession Map suggest that 1,300 jobs will be lost in Rochdale during the current recession.
The publication by the economists and software developers paints a disturbing picture of the town's current and future employment prospects.
The map, based on recent data for a range of indicators, predicts that 58 jobs will be lost in construction, 455 in distribution, hotels and restaurants, 60 in financial and business accounting, 604 in manufacturing and 123 in transport, storage and communications.
In December last year there were just 465 job vacancies in the borough, 0.59% of the workforce. In September 2006 vacancies represented 5.4% of the workforce.
Job Seeker Allowance claimants in December were 4.1% of Rochdale’s working age population compared with 2.37% in November 2004.
