Rochdale boy star of Guantanamo book
Date published: 01 February 2009
Rising author Anna Perera's latest novel is about how a young boy from Rochdale ends up behind barbed wire at Cuban terrorist camp Guantanamo.
'Guantanamo Boy' follows the ordeal of 15-year old Khalid Ahmed, who is originally from Rochdale. Khalid is on a family trip to Pakistan when he is kidnapped and taken to Guantanamo.
The timing of the fiction, which is aimed specifically at younger readers, fits nicely with US President Barack Obama's announcement that Guantanamo will be closed down.
Perera is seen as one of literature's rising stars and Guantanamo Boy is her fifth book.
