New look for lake activity centre

Date published: 30 January 2009

Work will start at the beginning of next week on an extension at Hollingworth Lake Water Activity Centre.

The £270,000 project will see the development of an indoor teaching area and changing and equipment facilities improved.

Link4Life Centre Manager, Gary Butler, explaining what the work would entail, said: “The building project will greatly improve the facilities available for changing and equipment which is essential to support the on-going development of the centre. It will also create a long needed indoor teaching area where schools and groups can study the theoretical aspects of courses. The investment in the centre will really position Hollingworth Lake at the forefront of outdoor and adventure activities in the North West.”

The work has been funded through the Rochdale Council capital programme with support from the Pennines Township strategic fund. This supports the Township’s commitment to promote the Pennines countryside as a major asset in the regeneration of the area and to increase access to active leisure.

Hollingworth Lake Water Activity Centre has been leading the way in provision of water activities in the North West since 1989. It has developed its range of activities into climbing and walking in recent years and, new for 2009, is about to launch a new mountain bike centre. It joined Link4Life in April 2007, with the introduction of the cultural trust.

The centre will remain open throughout the building work which is due to be finished by Easter. There will be restricted access to the concourse at the rear of the centre but minimal disruption is expected to the car park or lake access.
