Birds of a feather flock to Hollingworth Lake

Date published: 29 January 2009

Hollingworth Lake is the place to be for all bird lovers this weekend.

Rochdale Council’s countryside rangers, based at Hollingworth Lake, have teamed up with The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) to host the ‘Birds in the Park’ weekend at the Littleborough beauty spot.

The event aims to highlight the work the RSPB does and the importance of protecting birds and the environment. There will be a walk on both Saturday (31 January) and Sunday at 11am - led by an RSPB officer and volunteers - looking at bird behaviour and habitats in the surrounding countryside.

There will also be a stall at the lake’s Visitor Centre - manned by RSPB volunteers - who will provide information about birds and the work of the RSPB.

Eleanor Sherwin, Chief Ranger at Hollingworth Lake is delighted such an event is being held at the lake.

“We are very excited to be holding this event and working so closely with the RSPB," she said. "We hope as many people as possible will take the opportunity to visit the lake this weekend and find out more about our local bird life and what they can do to support it.”

Councillor Wera Hobhouse, Cabinet member for Environment and Sustainability at Rochdale Council, said: “The work of the RSPB is really valuable and I am pleased that we are working with them in this way. This event is a great chance for local people to explore the nature that is on their doorstep and learn about how bird populations reflect the health of the planet.”

The stall at the Visitor Centre will be open between 10.30am and 4pm on 31 January and 1 February. For more details contact the Countryside Rangers:
