Pub evacuated after suspicious petrol smell
Date published: 28 January 2009
Last Orders has been evacuated after suspicious petrol smell caused panic among customers.
Fire fighters rushed to the Drake Street pub at 3.30pm today (Wednesday 28 January) to discover that the pub, as well as some the its surrounding buildings, including Bonecat Music, smelt strongly of the substance, which is believed to have been poured down a nearby drain.
Crews are still on Drake Street at the moment investigating the problem.
Kay Sowerby, landlady of Last Orders said: “We had to evacuate the place because the smell was just so strong, apparently only half a pint of petrol can really cause a problem if it’s poured down a drain.
“What a daft thing to do, and it’s affecting local businesses on the street too”.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “Two fire engines are over there now from Rochdale, we believe nobody has been hurt”.
Last Orders is now open for business.
