Date published: 27 January 2009
A Rochdale company has paid out £3000 after an employee was electrocuted by a buried live wire.
The worker was operating a mechanical breaker for Trains (Rochdale) Ltd, of Nuttall Street, when incident occurred in August 2007. He was using the machinery to break up concrete when he was struck by the buried cable, receiving burns to his left arm and hand.
The Health and Safety Executive declared that the incident was easily avoidable. Investigating Officer Rosemary Leese-Weller said the company should have used plans and scanned the area to locate the cable before work began.
Trains was ordered to pay a £1000 fine and costs of £2000 after being found guilty of breaching the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
