Gun fired at car in Heywood

Date published: 27 January 2009

A car was shot at in Heywood during the early hours of Sunday morning (25 January).

Four men were driving along Bury New Road towards Heywood in a silver Volkswagen Golf when two men in a blue Subaru pulled up alongside them and began driving eratically, flashing their lights and blocking the Volkswagen.

The Volkswagen pulled off into Whalley Road and one of the victims got out to confront the men.

It was then that a gun was fired by one of the men in the Subaru. No one was hit by the shot.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened on Whalley Road near the junction with Sabden Close at about 12.20am.

The Subaru was found burnt out on Ashworth Road later that evening.

Detective Sergeant Matthew Findell from the Major Incident Team said: “There would have been people out in the area at the time of this shooting, particularly at the Hark to Towler pub on Bury New Road, and I am appealing to them to come forward with any information they may have.

”Although no one was injured in this incident, a shot was fired, which shows that these men are clearly prepared to use the weapon. It is vital we catch them and ensure the firearm is taken off the streets.”

The offenders are described as white, aged 25 to 30 years old. One of them was of slim build and the other was of heavy build.

Anyone with any information is asked to call the Major Incident Team at Chadderton on 0161 856 2475 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
