More say for people with learning disabilities

Date published: 26 January 2009

The council and a host of local learning disability service providers are to develop a new approach that hopes to give people with learning disabilities more choice and say in their lives.

People with learning disabilities will get far more choice and say in their lives thanks to an innovative approach that puts them at the heart of their care.

A spokesperson said: "By giving disabled people the loudest voice in plans for their future and in organising the support they need, they will take far greater control over choices and changes in their lives."

Rochdale Council’s cabinet member for health and social care, Councillor Dale Mulgrew said: “Person centred planning represents a radical shift in the way services are planned and delivered to people with learning disabilities. No longer will people be expected to live their lives according to the services provided, instead we will do our level best to support people to live the life they want to live.

“I’m delighted that the council’s adult care service and local service providers are so enthusiastically embracing person centred planning. It demonstrates their long-term commitment to improving the lives of the disabled people they work with.”
