Burglars blitzed in operation guardian
Date published: 20 January 2009
Ten people were arrested in Rochdale last Tuesday (13 January) as part of Operation Guardian, a forcewide day of action targeting burglary.
Officers were out in force across the borough using a range of tactics to tackle burglary and increase public awareness of how they can protect themselves from would-be criminals.
Six search warrants were executed by officers at the addresses of known and suspected offenders to check the possible possession of stolen property.
Public reassurance was a major part of the operation, and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) conducted special high profile patrols in burglary hot spot areas across the borough during which they identified properties that were vulnerable to burglars and provided crime reduction advice to the occupants.
Around 66 residents registered their valuables on the free, easy to use Immobilise.com property database at registration stations set up by PCSOs in community venues such as community centres, supermarkets and libraries across Rochdale.
Officers also visited around 450 homes as part of the operation to give crime reduction advice and literature to householders.
Chief Inspector James Troisi said: “Campaigns such as this shows residents across the division that police in Rochdale take burglary very seriously.
“As a Force we are committed to reducing this distressing crime and offenders should be aware that we are constantly watching them and we will take robust action where necessary.
“We are determined with the support of our partners and our communities to drive down this crime. Residents can support us by following the simple advice to lock doors and windows - even when they are home, use alarms and lights and register their valuables to put burglars out of a job this year.”
