Woman attacked at home by hammer-wielding robbers

Date published: 16 January 2009

A 40-year old woman took a serious blow to the head when she was hit by hammer-wielding robbers in her own home on Tuesday morning (13 January).

Between 10.30am and 11am two masked men used a sledgehammer to force entry to the house on Shawclough Road.

The raiders grabbed the woman and demanded cash before hitting her over the head with the hammer.

The woman managed to run away and the robbers fled empty handed. She was later taken to hospital for treatment to the head injury.

Detective Constable Charlie Stewart, from Rochdale CID, said: "Everyone has the right to feel safe in their own home and this woman's right has been violated in the most horrendous and violent way.

"To force your way into a one woman's house and assault her with a weapon is incomprehensible.

"I would appeal to anyone who has any information about who is responsible to come forward."

The first offender is described as white, 6ft 2in tall of slim build. He was wearing a grey hooded top and grey bobble hat.

The second offender is described as white, 6ft 1in tall of medium build. He was wearing a black hooded top and mask.

Anyone with any information is asked to call Rochdale CID, on 0161 856 1977, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
