Bowel cancer takes centre stage
Date published: 16 January 2009
A play that hopes to break down some of the embarrassing boundaries surrounding bowel cancer will be performed in Rochdale on Thursday 29 January.
Entitled ‘You, Me, Us’, the play takes an honest look at bowel cancer and the issues that prevent people from coming forward and discussing the condition.
Linked to the bowel cancer screening programme that was launched throughout Rochdale in April last year, it enforces the importance of screening and encourages people to take responsibility for their own health.
Bernadine O’Sullivan, consultant in public health at NHS Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale, said: “The play is a fun way of engaging with the public but raises awareness of some very important issues. Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer in the UK and the second leading cause of cancer deaths. 80% of people with bowel cancer are aged 60+.”
The 40 minute play is followed by a chance for the audience to raise their thoughts and concerns with local health professionals.
Anyone can attend the 10am performance at the Rochdale Carers Centre, Water Street, Rochdale.
It is completely free, and will benefit those that want to learn more about the disease or have been affected by it.
Call 01204 462178 if you wish to reserve your place, however the doors will be open on the day.
To help detect bowel cancer in the Rochdale Borough, NHS Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale is taking part in a National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme which automatically sends out home testing kits to everyone aged between 60 and 69. Those aged over 70 can request a kit.
If you have received a kit, make sure you take it and send it back, as if found early, 95% of patients live for longer after treatment.
If you would like to request a kit, contact: 0800 707 60 60
