Fire museum could be uprooted to Heywood

Date published: 09 January 2009

A popular museum could be being moved out of Rochdale and into Heywood because of a new development scheme.

Greater Manchester Fire Service Museum, currently located at the Maclure Road fire station, may be uprooted to Heywood train station.

Maclure Road is due to undergo “major redevelopment” which may not include space for the museum.

Transport bosses at GMPTA are still considering Green Lane as another possible location.

Councillor Rush, who believes Heywood would be the ‘perfect location’ for the museum if it is forced to move, gave Councillor Keith Whitmore, vice-chairman of Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority, a tour of the potential new site.

Do you think the museum should be moved? What would be an appropriate location? Call the news desk on 01706 523583.
