Police warn of bogus callers

Rochdale’s elderly residents are being visited by Police in a crackdown on doorstep crime.

Police Community Support Officers from Neighbourhood Policing Teams have been distributing leaflets and offering crime prevention advice following incidents of bogus callers stealing from vulnerable members of community.

Residents are being urged to check the identity of anyone who comes calling and ensure they are genuine before allowing them access to their home.

“A number of incidents have been reported in the last couple of weeks where callers are claiming to be from the gas company or coming to check the radiators. One particular incident saw an elderly resident have a small amount of cash stolen,” said Brian Farr, Crime Reduction Advisor.

“We have also had reports of a bogus caller claiming they are attending addresses and checking for carbon monoxide or that they are conducting a carbon footprint survey.

“Our message to everyone is simple if you are not sure about their identity, do not invite them in.

“Remember, genuine employees will not mind waiting while you contact the company to check their identity.”

Greater Manchester Police also advise asking callers for identification cards, checking with the visitor’s claimed company, and to look through a window or spy-hole if possible before opening the door.

Rochdale residents have also been urged to use the password scheme offered by utility companies where customers are assigned a password that a genuine representative will be able to quote.

There is also the ‘Nominated Neighbour’ scheme in which participants will not open their front door to strangers unless they are accompanied by a trusted neighbour or friend. More information on this scheme can be obtained by calling 0161 872 5050.
