Further funding to boost fire rescue service

Date published: 08 January 2009

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Authority will receive more than £70,000 in funding for equipment used to rescue people from collapsed buildings.

The funding is part of a £19 million lump sum aimed at providing vital equipment for the 46 Fire and Rescue Services nationwide.

The money will cover such things as the cost of protective clothing, replacement of oxygen and training supplies. It will also support the training for mass decontamination and search dog teams.

"It is vitally important that our Fire and Rescue Service is able to practice for the unexpected event that we all hope will never happen. But if it does our firefighters are ready and trained to use the vital rescue equipment.” said Fire Minister Sadiq Khan.

“The £19million announced today is in addition to that already provided through the Government's investment of a £1billion in specialist equipment for dealing with major incidents such as terrorism, industrial accident or extreme weather."
