Chimes to tackle crime

Warning bells to be issued to elderly residents.
Police officers will be handing out warning bells, personal attack alarms and crime prevention advice at Alkrington Community Centre in Middleton tomorrow (Thursday 8 January) as part of a drive to keep older members of the community safe during the winter months.
Bells, which can be easily attached to handbags and purses, make a sound if thieves attempt to steal belongings, and are useful for older and disabled people who are more vulnerable to pickpockets.
Inspector Gary Hall, for the Middleton neighbourhood policing team, said: "These devices should help to make shopping safer for older and more vulnerable people in our community. However, it is also worth remembering that every time you take your purse out of your bag you should put it back safely and fasten your bag properly.
"By keeping valuable items, such as money, purses and wallets out of sight and sticking to busy areas with a friend or family member, people can avoid becoming the victim of crime.”
