Mills & Boon Exhibition at the Wheatsheaf
Date published: 05 January 2009
Book worms have got a few weeks left to visit a special exhibition in Rochdale, marking 100 years of one of the country’s best-loved publishers.
Mills & Boon celebrates a century as one of the most popular brand names in publishing and an exhibition is currently on display at Wheatsheaf library. It traces the evolution in romantic fiction of Mills & Boon, reflecting the enormous changes in women’s lives in work, family and sex.
The exhibition also highlights the contribution of Mills & Boon to the appeal of romance, and the happy ending with the hero and heroine falling in love. The display includes a range of Mills & Boon branded products focussing on retro cover style including jigsaw puzzles, games and greetings cards.
Pamela Taylor-Bramwell, Reader Development and Stock Librarian at Wheatsheaf Library said: “This colourful exhibition features many wonderful book covers, photographs, cartoons and memorabilia. It weaves together the books and their writers and the women readers of romance, against the backdrop of history from the suffragette era through two world wars to the present day”
Over the last 100 years the Mills & Boon imprint has become synonymous with romantic fiction and today is part of Harlequin, the world’s largest publisher of romance fiction.
Clare Somerville, Retail Marketing and Sales Director, Harlequin Mills & Boon Ltd, said: “Mills & Boon is a British cultural phenomenon which has given pleasure to millions of readers around the world. The centenary affords us the opportunity to celebrate the enduring popularity of the genre through decades of change, exploring its literary heritage and its evolution into the 21st century.”
The Mills & Boon Centenary Exhibition continues at the Wheatsheaf library until 14 January 2009. For more information on the exhibition please contact the Wheatsheaf library on 01706 924900.
