Round Table collection nets £1500

Date published: 30 December 2008

Ho, ho, ho! Reports that Santa has been seen in various parts of Rochdale including a local supermarket are true. He recently accompanied Rochdale Round Table on their traditional Christmas can and cash collection around the streets of Rochdale.

Round Tablers braved the cold weather to embark on four street collections in Caldershaw, Clay Lane, Burnedge and Shawclough, and spent a whole day catching Christmas shoppers at Tesco. Their exploits raised nearly £1500 in cash, which will go towards the funding of a Parkinson’s Nurse in Rochdale, and they collected a huge number of cans of food, which have since been delivered to the Salvation Army for subsequent onward distribution to the elderly and needy in Rochdale.

Chairman Tony Pockney said: “We’d like to thank the public of Rochdale for their generosity; at a time when most people are feeling the effects of the economic downturn, the collections have been as successful as ever and as a result the needy in Rochdale will be helped this Christmas. We’d also like to think that the collections have gone some way towards funding the much needed Parkinson’s Nurse.”

The tablers were assisted by partners, their children and a number of the Rochdale Sea Cadets, whose organisation have themselves been the beneficiaries of Round Table fund raising this year. Round Table would also like to thank Wigwam Acoustics for supplying the sound system through which the Christmas music was played whilst covering the street of the town.
