Large blaze at Spotland mill
Date published: 30 December 2008
There was an intense fire at a disused mill in Spotland yesterday evening (Monday 29 December).
At around 6pm fire crews from across the borough attended the large blaze at the Dexine Mill off Spotland Road.
Firefighters were faced with a fire that had swept through the old mill buildings and at the height of the blaze four appliances and an arial appliance from Oldham were used to bring it under control.
Crews remained at the scene throughout the night, damping down the building.
The cause of the fire is as yet unknown.
The mill has been the subject of a controversial planning application over the past 12 months, with developers wishing to knock down the existing buildings and replace them with appartments on the River Spodden.
