Middleton sports apprenticeship scheme

Date published: 18 October 2007

Young people from Middleton, with an interest in working in sport and leisure, are being recruited for the second round of an apprenticeship scheme.

Link4Life, in partnership with Middleton Sports Forum, has had approval from Middleton Fair Shares for the second phase of its Sports Apprenticeship Scheme. The funding is to encourage young people from Middleton to get on the ladder to a career in sport and leisure.

The Middleton Sports Apprenticeship Scheme is launched this week to find 10 keen young people aged 16 – 24 from Middleton who are interested in following a career in sport. Once recruited onto the scheme successful apprentices will undertake a training programme and work experience hopefully leading to employment. Training modules available will include a range of sport specific qualifications, Community Sports Leader Award, First Aid Certificates and many more.

Jennifer Hughes, the project manager believes, “this is an excellent opportunity for young people in Middleton to improve their chances of employment in the growing sector of sport, health and leisure. It is a flexible programme which will stimulate individuals and is ideal for sports minded young people who may not have had chances or opportunities in the past.”

The apprenticeship is available for young unemployed, part/full time employed and part/full time students to apply. Core hours will be minimal as the programme will be flexible.

Apprentices will receive expenses and a bursary allocated upon reaching certain milestones:

  • First 100 hours - £200 (100 hours completed)
  • Next 75 hours - £200 (175 hours completed)
  • Next 75 hours - £200 (250 hours completed)

Nigel Hampson, Chairman of the Middleton Sports Forum, said: “This is a very exciting opportunity. Not only will it help the young people on the scheme but will give local sports clubs, leisure centres, and council sports development a new resource which hopefully they will be taking advantage of”.
