Rising to the challenge
Date published: 23 December 2008
A new Audit Commission report, Rising to the Challenge: improving fire service efficiency, has identified Greater Manchester as pioneers, stating that other fire services should follow their example. Rising to the Challenge outlines how fire services can work more effectively and economically, by using examples of the achievements of leading Fire and Rescue Services such as Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.
County Fire Officer Barry Dixon said: “We strive to provide the people of Greater Manchester with a Fire and Rescue Service that is effective, efficient and value for money. It is extremely rewarding to see that the work of the Fire Authority, our staff and our partners has been independently recognised for achieving that goal.”
Within the report Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service is highlighted for its work with partners to carry out Home Fire Risk Assessments. It also points out that the best services, such as Greater Manchester, have proved it's possible to save money without jeopardising standards of cover by changing shift patterns in line with demand or cutting the number of staff on duty when fires are least likely.
The Audit Commission is an independent watchdog, driving economy, efficiency and effectiveness in local public services to deliver better outcomes for everyone. As a force for improvement, the commission works in partnership to assess local public services and make practical recommendations for promoting a better quality of life for people.
