Off-duty police officer seriously assaulted

A 42 year old off-duty police officer was seriously assaulted when he went to the aid of a woman in Rochdale.
The man was walking home from work in Bamford, Rochdale, on Saturday morning when he saw the woman arguing with a man, who was part of a group.
As he walked over to see if he could help he was struck in the face with an object by one of the men in the group.
The officer was taken to hospital with a fractured cheek bone, where he remains in a stable condition.
