Shoppers warned to be vigilant of pickpockets

Date published: 18 December 2008

Keep your handbags close and your purses closer – that’s the warning being issued to shoppers in Middleton as the number of pick-pocketing crimes increases in the run up to Christmas.

The Neighbourhood Policing Team in Middleton reported that most thefts occur when bags are left unattended or put over the shoulder, hanging open.

“To reduce the chance of having your belongings stolen you can follow a few simple tips. This includes carrying handbags with you at all times and having the strap over your body rather than over the shoulder to ensure it is kept safe,” said Inspector Gary Hall.

“Don’t be a victim, while using the cash machine always keep your pin safe and put your money away as soon as you have taken it out of the machine. Your pin number must always be kept away from your card and if possible try to remember the number instead of writing it down.”

A similar warning was issued in Heywood earlier this week.

“Christmas shopping can be a really enjoyable time and we want everyone to have a happy, safe experience.” Inspector Hall continued.
