Transport Police prepare for Christmas

Date published: 05 December 2008

British Transport Police are stepping up their Christmas operations in order to maintain the season of goodwill and keep incidents on the rail network to a minimum.

High visibility operations are being increase to reassure the thousands of people using the rail network throughout the festive season.

"We hope people will notice the increased police activity," commented Chief Superintendent Peter Holden, BTP Sector Commander for the North West.

Officers will be looking out for anyone who is intimidating other passengers through anti-social behaviour or who is abusive towards rail staff.

"Rowdy and drunken behaviour isn’t just unpleasant for other passengers it makes them feel fearful while they’re simply travelling from A to B," added Chief Supt Holden.

"Anyone whose behaviour crosses the line and becomes disorderly or abusive towards other passengers or staff will be dealt with very proactively by our officers.

"People should enjoy themselves, but respect their fellow passengers and rail staff. If you are drinking, drink in moderation and you are less likely to be a victim of crime."

BTP’s Neighbourhood Policing Teams will be conducting high-visibility patrols across the railway network in the North West area targeting anti-social behaviour and assaults on staff.
