Council to talk to parents about Diploma options

Date published: 01 December 2008

Rochdale’s 14-19 Education and Skills Team are introducing parents of young people aged 14-19 from Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale, to the Diploma options available to their child.

A Diploma Parents’ Evening will be held at Rochdale Town Hall this afternoon (Monday 1 December), 5pm - 7pm and will provide parents with information, advice and guidance to better equip them in helping their child make informed decisions.

Jo Manfred, 14-19 Development Officer at Rochdale Council said: “A Diploma is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge for entry to both higher education and employment. It combines theoretical and practical learning. I would encourage all parents to come along and find out more about what the Diploma can offer and how they can help support their son/daughter along the right path.”

Last week, 300 ambitious young people aged between 14-16 from Secondary Schools across the borough attended the DCSF Diploma Roadshow to access information, advice and guidance on The Diploma.

This event will focus on providing information, advice and guidance to parents who want to ensure their son or daughter benefits from a fully rounded education. It is hoped the Diploma Parents Evening will see just as many visitors.

Diplomas are central to the reforms set out by the Department for Children, Schools and Families and are widely recognised as the most important change to the country’s qualification system in a generation.

Any parent of a 14-19 year old who would like to find out about The Diploma should attend the event at Rochdale Town Hall on 1 December 2008, 5pm-7pm or call Rochdale Council's 14-19 Education and Skills Team on 01706 925155 or email jo.manfred@rochdale.gov.uk
