No festive cheer for burglars
Date published: 01 December 2008
Police in Rochdale have launched a major crackdown on burglaries in the run up to Christmas and New Year.
As part of Operation Spin there will be more officers on the streets to act as a deterrent to thieves, disrupt criminal activity and reassure residents living in vulnerable areas.
Known offenders will be targeted across the division, with officers making arrests and bringing them to justice.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Bell said: “Burglary is a top priority for the Rochdale division. Through the launch of Operation Spin we aim to disrupt and deter thieves and make sure the festive season is a safe and happy one for residents.”
Residents are also being warned to keep their homes secure, as one in three burglaries is down to people leaving doors and windows unlocked or open.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Bell said: “Burglars will be looking for rich pickings at this time of year, as people buy presents and keep them in their homes. Residents can help us beat the burglars by keeping valuables out of view, closing and locking all doors and windows, putting an alarm on and leaving a light on when leaving the house.
“We would also encourage people to be vigilant when storing their car keys. Residents should never leave their car or house keys on view either near window sills, in porches or in hallways. Putting keys away out of sight, preferably in a locked drawer or cabinet, will make life harder for thieves. Security lighting at doors and windows and letterbox visor guards are also good deterrents.”
