Update: MEP stuck in Bombay terror attacks is “safe and well”

Date published: 27 November 2008

The North West MEP who took refuge in a hotel basement after being shot at by terrorists in India is safe and well.

Sajjad Karim was among two other MEPs who hid underneath the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Bombay during a murderous rampage lead by suspected Islamic terrorists.

The national news reported that at least 80 people were killed, 250 injured and up to 100 taken hostage in the hotel where the MEPs were staying.

The 38-year old Conservative MEP is in Mumbai as part of a trade delegation and was feared dead, but Rochdale Online can reveal that he is safe and well, and is awaiting a flight home tonight (Thursday November 27).

A spokesman for the Conservative party said: “We can assure everyone that Sajjad Karim is safe and well.

“The French are due to fly out to get him tonight. He is expected to be back in the UK tomorrow afternoon.”

Paul Rowen MP commented: “I would firstly like to condemn these atrocious attacks. This act against humanity has left me outraged and appalled. I know Saj well and I am relieved to see that he is OK albeit shocked.”

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office say those concerned about their British friends and relatives should call +44 (0)20 700 800 00 and all Britons in Mumbai should stay indoors.
