Pensioners still in the dark about old people's home demolition
Date published: 25 November 2008
The fate of an old people’s home is yet to be decided – leaving elderly tenants in the dark about their future residence.
Hare Hill Court, which is home to 26 pensioners, could be knocked down because its flats do not meet modern standards, meaning all the people who live there will be uprooted.
There is still no guarantee that they will be offered a suitable alternative.
The decision went before the Cabinet on Monday 24 November, but a report issued by council officers was rejected by the cabinet who wanted a more detailed report, guaranteeing an alternative home for the elderly residents.
Deputy Leader of the Council Irene Davidson said: “As a council it is our responsibility to deal with our older residents.
“It is imperative that we make proper progress in finding them alternative accommodation should this go ahead.
“As there is no guarantee of residence we will need to request a more detailed report so we can look into this properly.”
Councillor Keith Swift said: “If we do not guarantee somewhere else for the elderly people who live there, then we are leaving them in a state of uncertainty.”
