Date published: 24 November 2008

The Transport Innovation Fund referendum is 'on a knife edge', with the people of Rochdale marginally voting against the proposed transport improvements and subsequent congestion charge, according to figures released today (Monday 24 November) by the Greater Manchester Yes Campaign.

According to an analysis of canvassing returns, 51.4% of voters who expressed a clear view support the package, with 48.6% opposed. However, more than a quarter of the electorate are still to make up their minds.

According to the returns 50.6% of voters in Rochdale are set to return a 'No' vote, with 49.4% voting 'yes'.

The returns indicate that turn out is likely to exceed 63%.

The canvass of 5003 residents of Greater Manchester was conducted face to face and on the telephone between 27 October and 20 November.

Commenting on the returns, The Yes Campaign Director Dan Hodges said: “This referendum is on a knife edge. It’s clear that in every district every single vote is going to count, and every single voter has the potential to make the vital difference.”
