Young people ‘on board’ as bus is launched
Date published: 06 November 2008
There are now more exciting things for young people to do following the launch of a new youth bus this week, to be managed by Rochdale Council.
Rochdale Youth Council’s young people have funded the first bus, named ‘Where it’s at’ – a specially designed single decker coach packed full of equipment to entertain and educate youngsters that will travel throughout Rochdale, Heywood, Middleton and the Pennines.
Ed Kelly, Principal Youth Officer, who has led the project, said it is a fantastic vehicle: "The bus has been designed by young people, and they have devised, funded and had a real say on all aspects of it too. As a result I am sure it will keep young people engaged.
"The aim is to provide positive activities in a high tech supportive environment in areas of the borough where there are few or no youth facilities, for example where there are gatherings of young people who are at risk of becoming involved in anti-social behaviour.”
Onboard there is a recording studio, DJ mixing desk, flatscreen televisions, DVD player, games consoles, internet access and a chill out area where young people can meet friends and discuss a wide range of issues with youth workers in a safe supportive environment. There will be a series of workshops running on the bus covering everything from performing arts to sexual health.
The vehicle will also have sports equipment so that when it is parked up there will be the opportunity to take part in a wide range of outdoor fun.
"We're all extremely excited about the vehicle and keen for as many local young people as possible to come along and take a look at the bus and try out the facilities on board. I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has given their time, money and expertise to get this bus quite literally on the road!" added Mr Kelly.
It is hoped that the bus will be the first of three across Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale with two additions completing the fleet early next year.
The second bus will be funded by Rochdale Township.
Councillor William Hobhouse, Chairman of Rochdale Township said: “Rochdale Township has put extra money into this project. This means that a second bus will arrive soon, dedicated entirely to providing additional activities for our young people in Rochdale. This is another example of devolution in action.”
The first vehicle was officially launched at the town hall this week by the Mayor, Councillor Robin Parker, before setting off on its journey across the borough, which will include evening and weekend visits. At the launch councillors and more than 30 youngsters got a chance to see the vehicle for themselves before it hits the road for the first time.
The Mayor said he was very impressed: “It’s excellent, and I know a good deal of time and effort has gone in to get this first bus ready. I’m particularly pleased that young people have been so actively involved in all of this. We are looking forward to providing other similar vehicles for the borough.”
Rochdale Councils fleet of mobile youth buses will also be used by the Police, Schools and other organisations.
