Keep Britain Tidy’s #litterheroes ambassador Peter Winkler calls on Rochdale borough to join Great British Spring Clean

Date published: 14 February 2025

Rochdale Borough’s #LitterHeroes ambassador, Councillor Peter Winkler is appealing to residents across the borough to pledge to pick one bag of litter - or more - for Keep Britain Tidy’s 10th Great British Spring Clean

Rochdale Council’s shadow portfolio holder for community is encouraging people from across the Rochdale, borough to pledge to do their bit to clear up the litter that blights our communities during the Great British Spring Clean 2025.

This year’s mass campaign, from 21 March to 6 April, is the tenth time the charity has held the event, which brings together individuals, community organisations, businesses and councils to love where they live and make a difference to the environment on our doorstep.

Peter is one of nearly 200 Keep Britain Tidy #LitterHeroes Ambassadors and group leaders who work alongside the environmental charity to inspire volunteers to pick litter.

He is keen to stress litter-picking can be accessible to everybody with the right resources and is encouraging residents, families, neighbours, friends and colleagues to play their part in protecting the environment on their doorstep by pledging on Keep Britain Tidy’s website to pick a bag or more of litter this spring.

Peter said: “We host local clean-ups throughout the year, but the Great British Spring Clean is a fantastic opportunity to take part in the biggest nation-wide event by making a difference in your own community. We have active groups across the borough and if there isn’t one near you, we would love you to start the ball rolling in your area.”

“Litter-picking doesn’t have to be complicated; the council can lend you all the equipment you need, free of charge, and every bag of litter that you collect can be logged towards Keep Britian Tidy’s national total and disposed of responsibly by our local Environmental Management team.”

“The Great British Spring Clean, now in its 10th year, saw people up and down the country come together last year to clean up more than 425,000 bags of litter. With your support we would love to smash that total in 2025.”

Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive, Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, said: “We are so grateful for the game-changing support from Peter and our other Ambassadors and Group Leaders.

“The Great British Spring Clean is a fantastic way for people to take serious and immediate action to protect the environment on their doorstep, but to have fun and meet friends while doing it.

“During this year’s campaign, we are highlighting that the environment belongs to everyone, and that everyone is welcome to join in with our activities and celebrate the 10th Great British Spring Clean.

“We are humbled to see our army of #LitterHeroes volunteers carrying out these acts of kindness to make the planet a cleaner, safer place for our future generations.”
